Financial Strain and Judicial Delays Ignite Heated Assam Assembly Session

Proceedings in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Tuesday were marked by sharp exchanges and protests after the state government revealed large pending dues under the Jal Jeevan Mission and a massive backlog of court cases in Assam.
Replying to questions during the session, the government informed the House that dues of 4,102 contractors engaged under the Jal Jeevan Mission are yet to be cleared. The disclosure triggered strong reactions from the Opposition, which accused the government of mismanagement and neglecting contractors and workers associated with the flagship rural drinking water scheme.
The Assembly was also told that over 5.72 lakh cases are pending in courts across the state, with a significant number of them pending for more than five and ten years, highlighting the strain on Assam’s judicial system.
Political tempers flared further when legislators of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) staged a walkout after the Speaker rejected an adjournment motion related to alleged harassment of minority labourers. AIUDF members alleged that the issue was being ignored by the government.
During Question Hour, Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi protested over what he described as a decline in central grants to Assam and raised concerns about the state’s financial health. Following heated exchanges, Gogoi was suspended from the House for the remainder of Question Hour.
The disclosures and the subsequent protests added to the charged atmosphere in the Assembly, with the Opposition pressing the government for accountability on unpaid dues, judicial delays and welfare delivery gaps, while the treasury benches defended their record and accused the Opposition of disrupting proceedings.
