Assam State Safai Karmachari Commission Reviews Welfare Measures for Sanitation Workers

The Assam State Safai Karmachari Commission on Tuesday reviewed the implementation of welfare schemes and working conditions of sanitation workers during a district-level meeting held in Kamrup.
The review meeting took place at the Integrated District Commissioner’s Office at Amingaon and was chaired by Commission Chairman Baijnath Basfore. Officials from various government departments and representatives of local municipal bodies were present at the meeting.
During the discussions, the Commission assessed the status of welfare measures available to safai karmacharis, including access to government schemes, job security, and workplace safety. Issues related to service conditions, implementation gaps, and grievances raised by sanitation workers were also deliberated upon.
Chairman Basfore stressed the need for proper implementation of welfare schemes meant for sanitation workers and directed officials to ensure that eligible workers are not deprived of benefits due to administrative lapses. He also underscored the importance of maintaining dignity, safety, and social security for safai karmacharis engaged in essential public services.
Officials were instructed to submit updated reports on the number of sanitation workers, their employment status, and scheme coverage in the district. The Commission noted that similar review exercises will be conducted in other districts to monitor ground-level implementation and address long-pending issues.
The meeting forms part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to improve the socio-economic conditions of sanitation workers across Assam and to ensure effective enforcement of welfare policies at the district level.
