In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized a large consignment of heroin in Assam’s Cachar district and arrested two persons, officials said on Wednesday.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the joint team intercepted a vehicle on National Highway-306 late on Tuesday night. During a thorough search, security personnel recovered multiple packets of suspected heroin concealed inside the vehicle. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth several crore rupees in the illegal market.
Two individuals travelling in the vehicle were taken into custody on the spot. The vehicle used for transporting the drugs, along with mobile phones and other incriminating materials, was also seized as part of the operation.
Officials said preliminary investigations suggest that the consignment was being transported through Cachar as part of an inter-state or cross-border drug trafficking network. Further probes are underway to identify the source of the narcotics and to trace other members involved in the racket.
Cachar district, located close to Assam’s borders with other northeastern states, has emerged as a vulnerable transit route for narcotics smuggling in recent years. Security agencies have stepped up surveillance and joint operations in the region to curb the illegal trade.
The seized heroin and the arrested accused have been handed over to the DRI for further legal action under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
