A nationwide Bharat Bandh called by a joint forum of 10 central trade unions along with farmers’ organisations will be observed on Wednesday, February 12, with organisers claiming participation of nearly 30 crore workers across sectors, raising the likelihood of disruptions to public services in several states. The strike has been called to protest against the Centre’s labour codes, privatisation of public sector units, price rise, unemployment and issues related to wages and social security. While no official nationwide holiday has been declared, public transport services—including buses, autos and taxis—are expected to be affected in many regions, particularly in states with strong union presence such as Kerala, West Bengal, Karnataka and parts of eastern India. Banking services may face partial disruption as some bank employees join the strike, though banks will not remain officially closed, and ATMs, online and mobile banking services are expected to function normally. Schools and colleges are scheduled to remain open, but attendance could be impacted due to transport disruptions, with some institutions likely to take local decisions on closures or online classes. Railways and airports are expected to operate, though commuters may face difficulties reaching stations and terminals. Hospitals, emergency services and essential utilities will continue to function. Authorities have advised citizens to check local advisories and plan travel accordingly as the bandh is expected to cause sporadic shutdowns, road blockades and reduced services in several areas during the day.
