Congress hits streets in Dispur, targets Assam CM over alleged asset buildup

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday staged a street protest in Dispur, targeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over allegations of disproportionate accumulation of land and assets, and demanding greater transparency and accountability from the state’s top executive.
Led by senior Congress leaders and frontal organisation members, protesters marched in the Dispur area, raising slogans against the BJP-led government and accusing the Chief Minister and his family of amassing vast tracts of land after entering electoral politics. The demonstrators questioned how such assets were acquired and called for a clear public explanation.
Addressing the gathering, Congress leaders alleged that the Chief Minister’s declared income does not justify the scale of land and assets reportedly owned by his family. They also accused the government of diverting attention from issues such as rising prices, unemployment and welfare delivery by engaging in political attacks on opposition leaders.
Mahila Congress leaders, who were prominent in the protest, said ordinary families in Assam are struggling with inflation and debt, while those in power are allegedly witnessing a rapid growth in wealth. The party demanded an independent inquiry into the allegations and warned of intensified agitation if their demands are ignored.
The protest comes amid escalating political tensions in Assam, with the ruling BJP and the Congress locked in a war of words over corruption, governance and counter-allegations involving senior leaders from both sides. With the 2026 Assembly elections on the horizon, both parties have stepped up street mobilisation and public campaigns.
There was no immediate response from the Chief Minister or the BJP to the Congress allegations. Police were deployed in the area to maintain law and order, and the protest concluded without any reported untoward incident.
