Assam Governor Reviews NEP Implementation in Colleges and Universities of Lower Assam

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Monday reviewed the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in colleges and universities across Lower Assam, stressing the need for holistic, skill-oriented and multidisciplinary education to prepare students for future challenges.
The review meeting, held at Gauhati University, brought together vice-chancellors and representatives of universities and colleges from the region, along with senior officials from the state’s Higher Education and Secondary Education departments. The Governor took stock of the progress made so far and discussed key challenges in translating the policy’s vision into practice.
Emphasising the core objectives of NEP 2020, Acharya underlined the importance of four-year undergraduate programmes, multiple entry and exit options, the Academic Bank of Credits, and the integration of skill development with conventional academics. He said educational institutions must evolve into multidisciplinary centres that promote research, innovation and entrepreneurship.
The Governor also highlighted the critical role of teachers in successful implementation of the policy, calling for continuous professional development, adoption of modern pedagogical tools and effective use of digital technology. He stressed that student well-being should remain central, with equal focus on academics, sports, yoga, counselling and co-curricular activities such as NCC and Scouts and Guides.
During the interaction, Acharya encouraged institutions to strengthen industry linkages and explore alternative revenue models, including public-private partnerships, research collaborations and alumni support, to ensure financial sustainability and reduce over-dependence on government grants.
Reiterating that NEP 2020 is a transformative and learner-centric framework, the Governor said its success depends on coordinated efforts by teachers, administrators, students and parents. He added that meaningful implementation of the policy would help Assam build a skilled and responsible youth population aligned with national goals such as Viksit Bharat@2047 and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
