R-Day Scare in Assam: Man Arrested with 10,000 Detonators at Badarpur Railway Station

A major security scare was reported in Assam ahead of Republic Day after the Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a man with a massive consignment of 10,000 detonators at Badarpur Railway Station in Sribhumi district, police officials said.
The accused has been identified as Akhil Ali, a resident of the Nilambazar area of the district. He was detained during a routine security check at the railway station after his movements raised suspicion among security personnel. A subsequent search of his belongings led to the recovery of the detonators, which were reportedly packed in multiple bundles.
Senior police officers rushed to the spot following the seizure, and security at the railway station and surrounding areas was immediately tightened. The recovery of such a large quantity of explosive accessories in the run-up to Republic Day triggered concern among law-enforcement agencies.
Police said the detonators are commonly used in mining and construction activities but possession and transportation without valid authorisation is a serious offence. Investigations are underway to ascertain the source of the explosives, their intended destination and purpose, and whether the consignment was linked to any attempt to disrupt Republic Day celebrations.
The accused has been taken into custody and is being interrogated. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Explosives Act and other applicable laws.
Officials said further details would emerge as the investigation progresses, while security checks across sensitive locations in the district have been intensified as a precautionary measure.
