ECI Appoints Special Observer for Assam Assembly Elections

ECI Appoints Special Observer for Assam Assembly Elections

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed a Special Observer for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, intensifying oversight to ensure a free and fair electoral process in the state.
Retired IAS officer Manjeet Singh has been designated for the role under Article 324 of the Constitution, which empowers the poll body to supervise elections across the country. As Special Observer, Singh will function as the Commission’s representative on the ground, monitoring poll preparedness and the conduct of elections throughout Assam.
According to officials, the observer will make periodic visits to the state, review administrative and security arrangements, and submit detailed reports to the Commission. The role is considered crucial, often described as the “eyes and ears” of the ECI during elections.
The move comes as Assam gears up for the Assembly polls scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 9, covering all 126 constituencies. The counting of votes is slated for May 4.
In addition to appointing the Special Observer, the ECI has also initiated administrative measures, including the posting of senior police officials and reshuffling of key personnel, to strengthen election management and maintain law and order during the poll period.
The appointment reflects the Commission’s heightened focus on ensuring transparency and strict adherence to electoral norms in Assam, a politically significant state heading into the 2026 Assembly elections.
