In a significant crackdown on wildlife trafficking, forest officials rescued a pangolin and apprehended two suspected smugglers during a joint operation in Assam’s Bongaigaon district.
The operation was conducted by the Abhayapuri Forest Division in collaboration with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) at Chaltapara under Abhayapuri. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, officials carried out a raid and successfully recovered a live pangolin from the possession of the suspects.
The two individuals arrested in connection with the case have been identified as Osman Gani and Abu Sayeed. Forest officials detained the duo and initiated legal proceedings against them under relevant wildlife protection laws.
Authorities said pangolins are among the most trafficked mammals in the world due to the high demand for their scales and meat in the illegal wildlife trade. Officials suspect that the accused may be part of a larger wildlife trafficking network operating in the region.
The rescued pangolin has been taken into the custody of the forest department and is currently under observation and care.
Forest officials have launched a detailed investigation to uncover possible links to other members involved in the illegal wildlife trade.
