Assam invests ₹433 crore to upgrade temples and 22,923 namghars

The Assam government has invested ₹433 crore to upgrade infrastructure in temples and 22,923 namghars across the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.
The initiative aims to improve facilities at religious institutions that play a key role in the spiritual and cultural life of people in Assam. According to the Chief Minister, the funds have been allocated for renovation, development of basic infrastructure, and enhancement of amenities for devotees visiting temples and community prayer halls.
Namghars—traditional community prayer halls associated with the Neo-Vaishnavite movement propagated by the 15th-century saint Srimanta Sankardev—serve as important centres of religious and social life in the state. They function not only as places of worship but also as hubs for cultural activities, community meetings, and social gatherings in villages and towns.
Sarma said strengthening these institutions will help preserve the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of Assam while ensuring that future generations remain connected to their traditions.
Officials said the funds will be used for renovation works, construction of additional facilities, and overall infrastructure improvement at temples and namghars located in different districts across the state.
The move is part of the state government’s broader efforts to promote cultural heritage and support institutions that play a significant role in Assam’s community life.
