Three Suspended Congress MLAs Join BJP Ahead of Assam Assembly Election

In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, three suspended MLAs of the Indian National Congress joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday. The legislators Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Basanta Das and Sashi Kanta Das - formally joined the BJP at the party’s state headquarters in Guwahati.
The three leaders had earlier been suspended by the Congress for alleged anti-party activities. Their decision to join the BJP is being viewed as a major setback for the Congress in the state and a boost for the ruling party ahead of the polls.
Speaking after joining the party, Purkayastha criticised the Congress leadership and alleged that the party was following policies that did not align with the interests of Assam. He said the decision to switch to the BJP was taken to work for the development and security of the state.
Senior BJP leaders welcomed the three MLAs into the party, expressing confidence that their inclusion would strengthen the party’s organisational base ahead of the elections.
The development comes amid intensifying political activity in Assam, with major parties gearing up for the forthcoming Assembly polls and seeking to consolidate their support base across the state.
