Assam Govt Plans Traditional Dress Code for Visitors Above 12 at Batadrava Than

The Assam government is considering introducing a mandatory traditional dress code for visitors above the age of 12 at Batadrava Than to preserve the sanctity of the revered Vaishnavite shrine.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the proposal is under active consideration and may be implemented soon. Speaking to reporters after offering prayers during the ongoing Doul festival at the shrine, Sarma noted that devotees have expressed concern over visitors entering the Avirbhav Kshetra in varied attire that does not reflect the spiritual character of the site.
According to the Chief Minister, once notified, the rule will require visitors aged above 12 years to wear traditional attire while entering the premises. He indicated that the formal government process could take a few days before the dress code is made mandatory.
Batadrava Than holds immense religious and cultural importance as the birthplace of the 15th-century Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardev. The redeveloped complex, known as the Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Avirbhav Kshetra, was inaugurated in December 2025 following a major revamp by the state government.
Authorities said certain guidelines are already in place at the shrine, including restrictions on tobacco, outside food and unruly behaviour. Priority entry has also been informally given to visitors wearing traditional dress.
Officials maintained that the proposed dress code forms part of broader efforts to maintain the religious ambience and cultural ethos of one of Assam’s most significant pilgrimage centres.
