Assam has taken a significant step in expanding its agricultural footprint overseas with the first export of GI-tagged Karbi Anglong fresh ginger to London. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma termed the development a proud moment for the state and its farming community.
A consignment of around 1.2 metric tonnes of premium ginger, sourced from farmers in Karbi Anglong, was flagged off from Guwahati on Monday. The shipment marks the entry of the region’s geographically indicated ginger into the United Kingdom market for the first time.
Reacting to the milestone, Sarma said the export reflects Assam’s growing presence in global agricultural trade and aligns with the government’s push to enhance farmers’ income through value addition and improved market access. He added that the initiative would provide greater visibility and better price realisation for local producers.
The consignment was flagged off by Agriculture Minister Atul Bora. The export was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority in collaboration with NextOn Foods Pvt. Ltd..
Karbi Anglong ginger, which holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, is known for its strong aroma, pungency and high fibre content. Officials believe the GI certification enhances product authenticity and helps secure premium value in international markets.
The state government expressed optimism that the successful shipment will open new export avenues for other GI-tagged products from Assam and further strengthen farm-based livelihoods. The move is also being viewed as an important step toward positioning “Brand Assam” prominently in the global spice market
