Makum tailor honoured after 26 years of voluntary traffic service
Makum, Feb 25: In recognition of his extraordinary civic commitment, a local tailor from Makum in Assam’s Tinsukia district has been honoured for voluntarily managing traffic in the town for the past 26 years.
Dipak Das, a tailor by profession, has been assisting traffic police at busy junctions of Makum without any official designation or financial reward. For over two decades, he has been a familiar figure on the town’s roads, regulating vehicular movement and helping pedestrians cross safely, particularly during peak hours and market days.
According to local sources, Das began his voluntary service out of concern for frequent traffic congestion and the difficulties faced by schoolchildren, elderly residents and patients in navigating crowded roads. Balancing his livelihood with public service, he routinely steps out in uniform with a whistle after completing his tailoring work.
Officials and residents have widely praised Das’s dedication, describing his contribution as a remarkable example of community spirit and responsible citizenship. The recent honour conferred on him is being viewed as a fitting tribute to his long-standing, selfless service to the people of Makum.
Locals expressed hope that such recognition would inspire more citizens to participate in community-driven initiatives for public welfare.
