Assam Congress Intensifies Campaign with District-Level Briefings

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has intensified its political campaign against the BJP-led state government by rolling out a series of district-level press briefings to highlight its recently released “charge sheet” alleging corruption and governance failures.
The drive follows the formal release of the document on February 19 by AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, after which APCC president Gaurav Gogoi instructed party leaders to present what he described as documentary evidence before the public across Assam.
Addressing reporters at Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati, APCC Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur alleged the prevalence of a “syndicate raj” under the current dispensation. She claimed illegal trade in commodities such as coal, timber, sand, stone, supari and livestock was being facilitated through a commission-based network.
Borthakur also flagged alleged irregularities in development works, transfers and postings, and the tendering process, accusing the government of weakening administrative systems through parallel structures.
The Congress further alleged illegal accumulation of assets by ministers and MLAs, rising state borrowings despite CAG observations, and failure to grant ST status to six communities. It also criticised the government over the implementation of key provisions of the Assam Accord, including Clause 6.
Among other issues, the party raised concerns over the NRC process, eviction drives without adequate rehabilitation, unemployment, gaps in healthcare delivery, environmental degradation in Dehing Patkai National Park and Deepor Beel, and recurring urban flooding.
Congress leaders said similar press conferences have already been held in Jorhat, with more scheduled in Sonitpur, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Silchar and Mangaldoi as part of the party’s statewide outreach ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
