Barak Valley Gains Importance in Assam’s Development Roadmap: CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the Barak Valley has assumed increasing importance in the state’s development roadmap and in India’s Act East policy.
The Chief Minister made the statement ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled launch of the Vibrant Village Programme-II from Cachar district. Sarma said the selection of the Barak Valley for the national programme underscores the region’s growing strategic and economic relevance.
In a post on social media, Sarma observed that the Barak Valley, which he said had remained neglected for decades, is now emerging as a major focus area for the state government. He added that multiple infrastructure and connectivity projects are being pursued to accelerate development in the region.
Highlighting a key initiative, the Chief Minister said the government is working on plans to reduce travel time between Guwahati and Silchar to around five hours through a proposed expressway. Improved connectivity, he noted, would boost trade, tourism and overall economic integration of the Barak Valley with the rest of Assam.
Sarma further emphasised the government’s commitment to balanced development of both the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys. He said efforts are underway to strengthen administrative infrastructure, healthcare, education and employment opportunities in the Barak Valley.
The Chief Minister also referred to the proposed Barak Valley Secretariat, stating that it would enhance governance by bringing administrative services closer to the people and ensuring faster delivery of public services.
Reiterating the government’s focus on inclusive growth, Sarma said the state aims to ensure that every region benefits from Assam’s development journey.
