HC asks EJH SP, predecessor to appear next week in Thangsko blast case

The Meghalaya High Court has directed the Superintendent of Police (SP) of East Jaintia Hills and his predecessor to appear before it next week in connection with the Thangsko mine blast case.
The court issued the order while continuing its monitoring of the investigation into the explosion at an allegedly illegal coal mine in the Thangsko area, which resulted in loss of lives and raised serious concerns over enforcement lapses.
According to reports, the High Court asked the present SP of East Jaintia Hills, Pankaj Rasgania, along with the former SP, to remain present during the next hearing to apprise the court of the progress made in the probe and the actions taken against those responsible.
The bench has been taking a stern view of the incident and the broader issue of illegal coal mining in the district. Earlier, it had summoned district authorities, signalling concern over the continued operation of unauthorised mines despite regulatory restrictions.
The case remains under judicial scrutiny, and the court is expected to review the status of the investigation and measures adopted by the police and district administration to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
The Thangsko blast has sparked widespread concern in Meghalaya and renewed debate over safety compliance and monitoring of mining activities in East Jaintia Hills.
