Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday positioned India as a leading global hub for artificial intelligence at the India AI Impact Summit, calling for inclusive, ethical and human-centric development of emerging technologies.
Addressing delegates in New Delhi, Modi urged global leaders, technology companies and policymakers to collaborate in shaping AI that benefits humanity. “Design and develop in India, deliver to the world, deliver to humanity,” he said, underlining India’s ambition to become both a development and deployment centre for AI solutions.
The Prime Minister emphasised that artificial intelligence must remain accessible and accountable, particularly for developing nations. He highlighted the need to democratise AI so that its benefits are not concentrated among a few countries or corporations but reach the Global South as well.
The two-day summit brought together leaders, industry executives and policymakers from multiple countries to discuss AI governance, safety standards and innovation ecosystems. Among those participating were French President Emmanuel Macron and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who stressed the importance of global cooperation and safeguards in AI development.
Modi also spoke about the future of work, asserting that AI should augment human capabilities rather than replace them. He called for investments in skilling and digital infrastructure to prepare India’s workforce for an AI-driven economy.
The summit featured discussions on ethical frameworks, data governance, innovation funding and cross-border collaboration. Several investment commitments were announced, reflecting growing interest in India’s expanding digital and technology ecosystem.
With the event, India signalled its intent to play a central role in shaping global AI norms and policy conversations, positioning itself not only as a technology market but as a rule-maker in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
