Opposition parties in Assam have pressed the Congress to expedite the finalisation of a pre-poll alliance, underscoring the need for unity ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
The appeal came during a key meeting of anti-BJP parties held in Guwahati, where leaders discussed strategies to consolidate Opposition votes in the state. Several regional parties reportedly urged the Congress leadership to take a definitive call on seat-sharing and alliance partners within the next two days.
Sources said the discussions focused on building a broad coalition capable of mounting a strong challenge to the ruling BJP-led alliance. However, delays in formalising the alliance framework have triggered concern among smaller parties, which fear that prolonged uncertainty could weaken Opposition prospects.
The meeting assumes significance as senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is currently in Assam overseeing the party’s candidate-screening process and organisational preparations.
Political observers note that the Opposition is under pressure to present a united front well before the election schedule is announced. Leaders at the meeting emphasised that early clarity on seat distribution and partners would help streamline campaign planning and avoid last-minute confusion.
With the ruling alliance already intensifying its groundwork for the 2026 polls, Opposition parties believe timely coordination among anti-BJP forces will be crucial to making the contest competitive in Assam.
Further developments are expected after the Congress leadership completes internal consultations in the coming days.
