Assam announces 3% reservation in Grade I & II government jobs for tea garden, Adivasi communities

The Assam Government on Monday announced a 3 per cent reservation in Grade I and Grade II state government jobs for candidates belonging to tea garden and Adivasi communities, marking a significant expansion of affirmative action for these historically marginalised groups.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Officials said the move aims to enhance representation of tea tribes and Adivasis in higher echelons of government service, including administrative and police posts.
Until now, reservation benefits for tea garden and Adivasi communities were largely limited to Grade III and Grade IV positions. The latest decision extends the quota to senior posts, addressing long-standing demands for greater inclusion in decision-making and leadership roles within the state administration.
The government said the policy is part of its broader commitment to social justice and inclusive development, particularly for communities that have played a key role in Assam’s economy but remain underrepresented in government services. Detailed guidelines on implementation and applicability are expected to be issued by the concerned departments in due course.
The announcement comes ahead of the state’s upcoming Assembly elections and is expected to have significant political and social implications, especially in tea garden–dominated districts across Upper and Lower Assam.
