Assam: SSB, NDRF Conduct Joint Disaster Awareness Exercise in Sonapur

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Monday conducted a joint disaster awareness and preparedness exercise at Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati, aimed at strengthening community readiness and response capabilities during emergencies.
The exercise was organised by the 1st Battalion of the SSB in coordination with the 1st Battalion of the NDRF, Guwahati, at Dhangiri Ground near the toll gate in Sonapur. Personnel from both forces demonstrated essential life-saving and rescue techniques, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first-aid measures, safe evacuation methods, and the correct use of fire extinguishers.
Special emphasis was laid on preparedness for earthquakes and fire-related incidents, which pose recurring risks in many parts of Assam. The session also highlighted the importance of quick decision-making, coordination, and public awareness during natural and man-made disasters.
Local residents, including students and villagers from nearby areas, actively participated in the programme and interacted with the rescue personnel, gaining hands-on exposure to basic disaster response practices. Officials said such exercises help bridge the gap between uniformed forces and civilians, ensuring faster and more effective responses during emergencies.
The SSB and NDRF stated that similar joint initiatives will continue in the future to build a culture of preparedness and resilience among communities, particularly in disaster-prone regions of the state.
