PM Modi Slams Congress for ‘Decades of Neglect’ That Held Back Assam
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Indian National Congress, accusing it of neglecting Assam for decades and pushing the state into economic backwardness, insecurity, and developmental stagnation. Addressing a public gathering, Modi said that successive Congress governments failed to prioritise Assam and the Northeast, leaving the region deprived of infrastructure, investment, and opportunities, while indulging in vote-bank politics that, he alleged, disrupted the state’s demographic balance and encouraged instability. The Prime Minister claimed that issues such as poor connectivity, lack of industrial growth, and prolonged insurgency were outcomes of Congress’s policies, adding that his government had worked to reverse this legacy through major investments in roads, railways, bridges, and social welfare schemes. Highlighting peace accords and improved law-and-order conditions, Modi asserted that Assam was now on a path of rapid development and integration with the national growth story. The remarks come amid heightened political activity ahead of upcoming elections, with the BJP seeking to contrast its governance record with what it describes as Congress’s “years of neglect.” Congress leaders, however, have rejected the allegations, accusing the Prime Minister of politicising development and questioning the Centre’s claims on employment generation and inclusive growth in the state.
