A semi-high-speed Vande Bharat train service connecting Tripura and Assam is expected to be launched in 2026, Union Minister of State Tokhan Sahu said on Tuesday, underlining the Centre’s push to strengthen rail connectivity in the Northeast. The proposed service will link Agartala with Guwahati, significantly reducing travel time and improving inter-state connectivity.
Speaking to reporters in Agartala, Sahu said the plan is supported by provisions made in the Union Budget 2026, which has earmarked ₹11,486 crore for railway infrastructure development in the northeastern region. He added that 100 per cent railway electrification has been completed in the Northeast, creating the necessary conditions for the introduction of modern, faster trains such as the Vande Bharat.
The minister said the proposed Agartala–Guwahati Vande Bharat service reflects the government’s broader strategy to integrate the Northeast with the national transport network and boost economic activity. Improved rail connectivity, he noted, would facilitate trade, tourism and people-to-people movement between Tripura, Assam and neighbouring states.
Sahu also highlighted that the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has received its highest-ever allocation in the current budget, alongside investments in logistics hubs, cross-border rail links and social infrastructure projects. He described the budget as a roadmap for accelerated development in the region, aligned with the vision of “Viksit Bharat.”
While details regarding the train’s schedule, stoppages and travel time are yet to be announced, officials indicated that planning and preparatory work are underway, with the service expected to become operational next year.
