More than 2.43 lakh names have been deleted from Assam’s final electoral roll for 2026 following a Special Revision (SR) exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India ahead of the state Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday, stating that the move was aimed at cleaning up the voters’ list by removing “doubtful voters”, including names of deceased persons, duplicate entries, voters who have permanently shifted residence, and those who could not be verified during door-to-door checks by booth-level officers; Sarma said the deletions were based on objections and complaints examined during the revision process and described the exercise as “only the beginning” of efforts to ensure an error-free electoral roll, while asserting that no genuine Indian citizen would be disenfranchised as eligible voters whose names were removed can reapply or appeal under provisions of the Representation of the People Act; following the revision, Assam’s final electoral roll now stands at around 2.49 crore voters, including men, women and third-gender electors, even as opposition parties have raised concerns over possible exclusion of genuine voters and sought greater transparency, a charge the government has rejected, maintaining that adequate safeguards and legal remedies are in place.
