The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Sunday said it is considering legal action against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his recent remarks and disclosures targeting senior Congress leader and MP Gaurav Gogoi and his family, escalating an already bitter political confrontation in the state.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, APCC leaders alleged that the Chief Minister had crossed constitutional and moral limits by making personal allegations and dragging private family matters, including references to minors, into political discourse. Congress leaders said such actions not only violate democratic norms but may also attract provisions under existing laws, including those meant to protect children.
APCC president Gaurav Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of using state machinery and official platforms to run a “politically motivated smear campaign” against the Opposition. He said the party’s legal team is examining all available options, including criminal and civil remedies, and that a final decision on initiating legal proceedings would be taken soon.
“The Chief Minister is repeatedly misusing his position to intimidate political opponents and deflect attention from issues of governance. Personal attacks and public disclosures involving family members, especially children, are unacceptable in a democracy,” Gogoi said.
The Congress also dismissed allegations made by the Chief Minister in recent statements and press briefings as baseless and defamatory, claiming they were aimed at diverting public attention from rising unemployment, price rise and law-and-order concerns in Assam.
Reacting to the Congress move, BJP leaders defended the Chief Minister, stating that his statements were based on facts and that the government would respond appropriately to any legal challenge. The Chief Minister has earlier maintained that he is prepared to face any legal scrutiny and has denied wrongdoing.
The development comes amid intensifying political tensions in Assam, with both the ruling BJP and the Congress exchanging sharp accusations ahead of upcoming political battles, signalling that the dispute may now shift from the political arena to the courts.
