Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s electoral rolls will be undertaken after the conclusion of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, adding that the exercise will be conducted in a “very extensive and proper manner.”
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the state government had earlier requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) to carry out the intensive revision before the polls. However, the Commission decided to go ahead with a Special Revision (SR) for the time being, citing procedural reasons, including the fact that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has not yet been formally notified.
At present, Assam is undergoing a Special Revision of the voter list ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled for early 2026. The ongoing process focuses on updating electoral rolls through additions, deletions, and corrections, including removal of duplicate entries and names of deceased or shifted voters. The final electoral roll under this revision is expected to be published next month.
The Chief Minister clarified that a Special Intensive Revision is a more detailed and rigorous exercise, involving door-to-door verification by Booth Level Officers, and is aimed at ensuring greater accuracy and integrity of the electoral rolls.
“The SIR will be conducted after the elections and will be very comprehensive,” Sarma said, emphasizing that the exercise would help further strengthen the voter database in the state.
The announcement assumes significance in Assam, where electoral roll accuracy has long remained a sensitive and closely watched issue due to demographic and citizenship-related concerns. The post-poll revision is expected to play a key role in streamlining the state’s electoral system in the years ahead.
