Renowned cultural figure Nuruddin Ahmed of Assam and nine other personalities from different Northeastern states have been named Padma Shri awardees, the Government of India announced on the eve of Republic Day. The Padma Shri is the country’s fourth-highest civilian award, conferred for distinguished contributions in various fields including arts, social work, literature, education and public affairs.
According to the official list released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, five awardees are from Assam, reflecting the state’s strong representation among this year’s Padma recipients. Nuruddin Ahmed has been honoured for his significant contribution to arts and cultural preservation. Other awardees from Assam include individuals recognised for their work in arts, agriculture and public service.
Apart from Assam, awardees have been selected from Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura, highlighting achievements across the Northeast in areas such as traditional arts, social work, literature, education and environmental conservation. Some of the honours have been conferred posthumously, recognising lifelong contributions to society.
The inclusion of ten personalities from the Northeast in this year’s Padma Shri list has been widely welcomed across the region. Political leaders, cultural organisations and civil society groups have congratulated the awardees, calling the recognition a moment of pride for the Northeast and a boost to the visibility of its rich cultural and social contributions at the national level.
The Padma Awards will be formally conferred by the President of India at a ceremonial function to be held later this year at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
