Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly constructed terminal building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on December 20, marking a major boost to Assam’s aviation infrastructure and connectivity in the Northeast.
The new terminal, touted as India’s first nature-themed airport terminal, reflects Assam’s rich natural and cultural heritage through its architecture and design. Inspired by the state’s biodiversity, the terminal incorporates elements such as bamboo, orchids, wildlife motifs from Kaziranga, and indigenous landscaping, creating a distinctive identity rooted in the region.
Designed to significantly enhance passenger handling capacity, the expanded terminal is expected to accommodate over one crore passengers annually, easing congestion and improving travel experience for domestic and international flyers. The project aligns with the Centre’s broader push to strengthen connectivity and economic integration of the northeastern states.
During the visit, the Prime Minister will also unveil an 80-foot statue of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi, Assam’s first Chief Minister and a Bharat Ratna awardee. The statue, installed at the airport premises, commemorates Bardoloi’s pivotal role in safeguarding Assam’s identity and guiding the state during its formative years after Independence.
In addition to the airport inauguration, Modi is scheduled to launch and dedicate multiple development projects across the state. On the second day of his visit, he is expected to perform the bhoomi pujan for a major ammonia-urea fertiliser project at Namrup in Dibrugarh district, a venture aimed at strengthening agricultural productivity and industrial growth in the region.
The Prime Minister will also pay homage to martyrs of the Assam Movement at Swahid Smarak Kshetra and participate in various public and official programmes during his two-day visit.
The visit underscores the Centre’s continued focus on infrastructure development, industrial expansion, and cultural recognition in Assam, positioning the state as a key gateway to the Northeast and Southeast Asia.
