The ongoing investigation in Assam into the death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg will continue independently despite Singapore authorities concluding that the incident was accidental, officials said on Thursday.
The Singapore Police Force has wrapped up its probe into the singer’s death in September 2025, finding no evidence of foul play. A state coroner in Singapore ruled that Garg died due to accidental drowning during a yacht outing near Lazarus Island.
According to findings, the incident occurred on September 19, 2025, when the singer reportedly entered the water without a life jacket and later became unresponsive. Post-mortem and toxicology reports confirmed drowning as the cause of death, with indications that alcohol consumption may have affected coordination.
However, officials in Assam clarified that the conclusions reached by Singapore authorities would not influence the state’s investigation, which is being handled separately.
Earlier, the Assam Police had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death. The SIT had raised suspicions of foul play and registered a criminal case, invoking serious charges, including murder, against several accused.
The case has drawn significant public and political attention in Assam, with contrasting claims over whether the death was a tragic accident or the result of a criminal act.
Authorities reiterated that the Assam probe will proceed based on evidence collected within its jurisdiction, and further legal action will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
Garg, one of Assam’s most influential cultural icons, enjoyed a massive following across the Northeast and beyond. His death in 2025 had triggered widespread grief and calls for a thorough and transparent inquiry.
