Rahul Gandhi calls Himanta Biswa Sarma ‘most corrupt CM’, alleges ‘land ATM’ in Assam

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him the “most corrupt chief minister in India” and accusing the BJP leadership of running a “land ATM” in the state.
Addressing an election rally in Bokajan ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly polls, Gandhi alleged that Sarma, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is facilitating the transfer of land from common people to select corporate groups.
He claimed that large tracts of land have been handed over to a few industrialists, alleging that the process benefits powerful interests at the cost of local communities. Gandhi further said that if voted to power, the Congress would investigate such transactions and ensure protection of land rights.
Highlighting issues related to indigenous communities, Gandhi also promised greater autonomy and empowerment for people in Sixth Schedule areas, including regions like Karbi Anglong.
The remarks come amid an intensifying political battle in Assam, with the BJP aiming to retain power and the Congress seeking a comeback in the upcoming Assembly elections. The campaign has seen a series of sharp exchanges between leaders of both parties, reflecting the high-stakes nature of the contest.
The BJP has not yet issued a detailed response to Gandhi’s latest allegations.
