Remembering India's Missile Man APJ Abdul Kalam: His 10 Big Achievements

Today is the birthday of India's 'Missile Man'. Late aerospace scientist, teacher and former President of the country, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931.

His birth anniversary is celebrated as World Students' Day. He was born into a Tamil Muslim family in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu and studied physics and aerospace engineering. Abdul Kalam's father's name was Jainal Abdin who owned a boat and was the imam of a local mosque. His mother's name was Asiyamma, who was a housewife.

World Students' Day is celebrated nationally in India every year to honour Kalam's efforts towards students and education. Kalam is remembered as the 'President of the People' and his birthday is celebrated as Students' Day.

His involvement in nuclear power in India earned him the title of "Missile Man of India". For his contribution, the Government of India conferred on him the highest civilian award.

His important role, his achievements and the inspiration given to the students are still remembered. Every year, Abdul Kalam's birthday is celebrated as World Students' Day.

He started his career by designing a small hovercraft at DRDO. He was an aerospace scientist and also played an important role in the Pokhran-II nuclear test in May 1998. He was honoured with several prestigious awards on various occasions, including India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1997. He was the President of India from 2002 to 2007.
