"Welcome The Decision But...": Bhagat Singh's Nephew On Renaming Chandigarh Airport

Bhagat Singh

Professor Jagmohan Singh, nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh on Sunday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement to name the Chandigarh Airport after the great martyr and termed it as a victory of the people.

In the 93rd episode of his monthly Mann ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that Chandigarh airport will now be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh as a tribute to the great freedom fighter.

Prof. Singh said that he had made his decision to honour the great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in the government. But he mentioned that this decision was a long-standing decision. At the same time, he said that the issue of chandigarh airport was renamed as Shaheed Bhagat Singh was raised in 2006 and it was proposed in the 100th birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh in the presence of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. In this session, there was a demand to rename the airport in the name of Shahidjana. But the Haryana government started with the naming of its own people and at that time a central minister made a statement that the airport should now be renamed after a particular person and not after a particular person.

Professor Singh also said that under pressure from the people of the state, the Haryana government had passed a resolution in the state assembly in 2010 to name chandigarh airport after Shaheed Bhagat Singh. He added that the airport should not be handed over to any corporate, which is against the thinking of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. The Prime Minister officially acknowledged that Shaheed Bhagat Singh is the biggest martyr in the country and now Chandigarh airport will also be named after him. Shaheed Bhagat Singh's mother Vidyavati believed that her son did not like to stand alone and hence pictures of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev should be kept inside the airport, said Prof Singh.
