Teachers' Day will be celebrated across the country today. Teachers' Day is celebrated every year on September 5 to recognise and celebrate the duties of educationists including teachers, researchers and professors of India. Teachers' Day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of former President of the country, Bharat Ratna Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Born on September 5, 1888, Dr. Radhakrishnan was the first Vice President of India and the second President of India. Dr. Radhakrishnan is well known for his remarkable work as a teacher, philosopher and scholar. Since 1962, Teachers' Day has been celebrated in India on September 5 to honour Dr. Radhakrishnan's remarkable vision towards education and students.
As a part of the teacher's day, the President of India will provide the state distribution to the teachers. The purpose of providing state awards to the teachers is to celebrate the unique contribution of the best teachers in the country and to honor those teachers, whose education programs are not only enriched by their commitment and initiatives, as well as to enrich the quality of education of those people.

Five facts about the life of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan—
1. Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1988. He was born in a Telugu family in Tiruttani town of Tamil Nadu. Radhakrishnan was a renowned student and had received various scholarships all his life and he studied at tirupati's school and then went to Vellore for studies.
2. Dr. Radhakrishnan studied philosophy at the Christian College in Madras. He is considered one of the greatest philosophers in the history of India till date.
3. After completing his degree, Dr. Radhakrishnan joined madras presidency college as professor of philosophy and then went on to work as professor of philosophy at the University of Mysore.
4. Dr. Radhakrishnan served as the first Vice President of India from 1952 to 1962 and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967. He was India's Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1949 to 1952. Dr. Radhakrishnan also served as the fourth Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1939 to 1948. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1984.
5. Some of his notable works include the reign of religion in contemporary philosophy, Rabindranath Tagore's philosophy, the Hindu view of life, the future of Kalki or civilization, an idealistic view of life, The Religion We Need, India and China, and Gautama the Buddha.
