Assam Seeks Japanese Investment in Semiconductors, Infrastructure

The Assam government has stepped up efforts to attract Japanese investment in high-technology and infrastructure sectors, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma holding key meetings with senior Japanese officials and industry representatives.
During his recent engagements, Sarma met Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Iwao Horii and Ambassador Keiichi Ono, pitching Assam as an emerging destination for investments in semiconductors, infrastructure, renewable energy and information technology.
Officials said Japanese firms showed particular interest in the upcoming semiconductor project at Jagiroad, which the state government is positioning as a cornerstone of Assam’s electronics manufacturing ambitions. The project is expected to help build a broader semiconductor ecosystem and integrate the state into global supply chains.
The discussions also explored cooperation in skill development and the possibility of expanding employment opportunities for Assam’s youth in Japan, indicating that the partnership could extend beyond manufacturing into human resource development.
Assam’s outreach comes amid a broader push by the state to emerge as a semiconductor and electronics hub in India’s Northeast. The proposed ₹27,000-crore semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad, being developed by Tata Electronics, is seen as a major step in that direction.
In recent months, the state government has actively courted global investors at international forums, highlighting Assam’s improving infrastructure, policy incentives and strategic location as advantages for high-tech industries.
Officials believe deeper India–Japan industrial cooperation could accelerate industrialisation in the Northeast while contributing to India’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported semiconductor components.
