A retired Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel was arrested in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Saturday in connection with alleged espionage activities, while four others were taken into custody in Arunachal Pradesh, police officials confirmed. The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into a suspected spy network targeting India’s defence infrastructure.
The arrested ex-IAF man has been identified as Kulendra Sharma, a former Junior Warrant Officer, who is accused of contacting operatives linked to foreign intelligence agencies and sharing sensitive defence-related information. Sharma, a resident of Patia, Tezpur, came under surveillance following intelligence inputs regarding his activities. Authorities recovered his laptop and mobile devices, which are now undergoing forensic examination. Some data, however, was reportedly deleted prior to seizure.
A case has been registered against Sharma under provisions of the law related to endangering national sovereignty, criminal conspiracy, and tampering with evidence. He is scheduled to be produced before a local court as the investigation continues.
In Arunachal Pradesh, police arrested four additional suspects, all reportedly residents of Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir, allegedly involved in transmitting military and defence information to foreign handlers through encrypted platforms.
Security agencies stated that the arrests highlight intensified efforts to dismantle espionage networks operating in the Northeast and safeguard sensitive installations. Investigations are ongoing, and more details are expected in the coming days.
