Gaurav Gogoi Targets Assam CM, Alleges ‘Biggest Land Broker Sits in Dispur’

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging large-scale land misappropriation by the state government and claiming that “Assam’s biggest land broker sits in Dispur.”
Addressing a public rally at Bihpuria in Lakhimpur district, Gogoi accused the BJP-led government of favouring corporate houses and influential individuals while common people continue to struggle to obtain land pattas under the state’s Basundhara scheme.
“The Chief Minister talks about protecting indigenous people, but in reality thousands of bighas of land are being handed over to big corporate groups,” Gogoi alleged, claiming that nearly 40,000 bighas of tribal land had been allotted to large business entities. He described the alleged land transfers as an “assault on the rights of indigenous communities.”
The Congress leader also questioned the rise in businesses linked to the Chief Minister’s family, alleging that multiple companies are registered in the name of Sarma’s son. Contrasting this with his own family’s public life, Gogoi said the Congress stood for transparency and accountability in governance.
Taking aim at the government’s economic management, Gogoi claimed that Assam’s debt has crossed ₹1.5 lakh crore and accused the BJP of increasing land premiums and expanding liquor sales to raise revenue. He further alleged irregularities in the preparation of electoral rolls, claiming that voter lists were being manipulated ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
The ruling BJP has not issued an immediate response to Gogoi’s allegations.
The remarks come amid intensifying political activity in Assam as parties begin positioning themselves for the next Assembly polls, with land rights, governance and allegations of cronyism emerging as key issues in the political discourse.
