Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday paid tribute to renowned scientist Homi Jehangir Bhabha, describing him as a visionary who combined scientific excellence with nation-building and laid the foundation of modern scientific India.
In a message shared on social media on the occasion of Bhabha’s death anniversary, Sarma said that India’s journey into advanced science began with Bhabha’s foresight and leadership. “Homi J. Bhabha combined scientific brilliance with nation-building foresight,” the Chief Minister wrote, highlighting the scientist’s enduring contribution to the country.
Bhabha, widely regarded as the father of India’s nuclear programme, played a pivotal role in shaping India’s scientific institutions in the years following Independence. He was instrumental in establishing key organisations such as the Atomic Energy Commission and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), which continue to form the backbone of India’s nuclear and scientific research ecosystem.
The Chief Minister noted that Bhabha’s vision not only advanced scientific research but also strengthened India’s pursuit of self-reliance in strategic sectors. His work, Sarma said, inspired generations of scientists and helped position India as a global player in science and technology.
Tributes to Bhabha were paid across the country by political leaders, scientists and academic institutions, underscoring his lasting legacy in shaping India’s scientific and technological progress.
