NFR Upgrades Trains, Bridges, Cargo Terminals and Passenger Amenities Across Assam
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has undertaken a series of major infrastructure and service upgrades across Assam, aimed at improving passenger comfort, strengthening safety measures and enhancing freight handling capacity in the region.
As part of the modernisation drive, several passenger trains operating in Assam are being upgraded with Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, replacing conventional ICF coaches. Railway officials said the move will significantly improve safety standards, riding comfort and operational efficiency. The Sealdah–Silchar Kanchanjunga Express has already been upgraded, while other important services, including the Tinsukia–Naharlagun Express and the Silchar–Agartala Express, are scheduled for similar upgrades.
To enhance safety and maintenance efficiency, NFR is also constructing pathways on railway bridges across the zone. More than 550 bridges have been identified for the project, with over 100 bridge pathways targeted for completion in the current financial year. These pathways will allow safer inspection and easier movement of railway personnel during maintenance work.
In a boost to freight and logistics infrastructure, NFR is expanding cargo handling facilities under the Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal initiative. Six new cargo terminals are being developed in Assam, including one at Baihata, which is expected to become operational soon. Once commissioned, the terminal is projected to handle over 25 freight rakes per month, benefiting local industries and reducing transportation costs.
Passenger amenities are also being strengthened across several stations in the state. Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) have been installed at stations such as Kokrajhar, Dalgaon, Fakiragram Junction, Dhubri and Gossaigaon Hat to promote digital ticketing and ease congestion at booking counters.
Railway officials said the upgrades are part of NFR’s broader effort to modernise railway infrastructure in the Northeast, improve connectivity and ensure safer, more efficient rail services for passengers and freight customers alike.
