BJP Focuses on UCC, Eviction Drives in Assam Poll Strategy

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has placed issues such as the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), eviction drives, and action against illegal immigration at the centre of its campaign for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, drawing attention to its strategy of consolidating support among Hindu voters.
Led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the party has projected the proposed implementation of the UCC as a step towards ensuring uniform personal laws and strengthening social cohesion. The BJP has indicated that tribal areas under the Sixth Schedule would remain outside the purview of such a law.
Eviction drives carried out in different parts of the state have also emerged as a key political issue. The state government has maintained that these operations are aimed at clearing encroached land and safeguarding the rights of indigenous communities. However, opposition parties have alleged that many of those affected belong to minority communities, raising concerns over the humanitarian and political implications of such actions.
The BJP has further reiterated its commitment to intensifying measures against illegal infiltration, an issue that has long been politically sensitive in Assam. The party argues that strict action is necessary to protect the state’s demographic balance and cultural identity.
Political observers note that these themes—UCC, land rights, and immigration—are being framed as part of a broader narrative centred on identity and security. They suggest that the BJP is attempting to consolidate Hindu votes by appealing to concerns over land, resources, and demographic changes.
At the same time, the opposition, including the Congress and AIUDF, has accused the BJP of pursuing policies that could deepen social divisions. The ruling party has rejected these allegations, stating that its actions are guided by legal and administrative considerations rather than electoral calculations.
Alongside these issues, the BJP has also highlighted development and welfare initiatives, including promises related to employment generation, infrastructure, and social schemes, as part of its broader electoral agenda.
With campaigning gaining momentum, the focus on identity-linked issues is expected to remain a defining feature of the political discourse in Assam in the run-up to the polls.
