Boundary Pillar Erection Begins in Pakke Kessang–Biswanath Sector, Marking Major Step in Arunachal–Assam Accord

The long-pending process of physically demarcating the Arunachal Pradesh–Assam boundary has entered a crucial phase with the commencement of boundary pillar erection in the Pakke Kessang–Biswanath sector. The on-ground exercise marks a significant implementation milestone following the inter-state agreement reached between the two northeastern states to resolve their decades-old boundary dispute.
Officials from both state administrations, along with technical teams from the Survey of India, have begun joint fieldwork to install the pillars at mutually agreed locations. The exercise is being carried out in coordination with district authorities and security personnel to ensure accuracy, transparency and smooth execution. Local representatives and community members are also being kept informed to prevent misunderstandings and maintain harmony during the process.
The Arunachal–Assam boundary dispute, which dates back several decades, has been a source of periodic tension across multiple sectors along the inter-state border. After sustained negotiations, consultations, and field-level verifications, the two states signed a Memorandum of Understanding to amicably settle the dispute, paving the way for phased physical demarcation.
Leaders from both states have described the start of pillar erection as a historic and confidence-building measure, stating that clear boundary demarcation will help reduce administrative confusion, prevent local disputes, and strengthen inter-state cooperation. Officials indicated that similar exercises would be taken up in other agreed sectors in a phased manner as part of the broader implementation plan.
The latest development is being seen as a concrete step towards lasting peace and administrative clarity along the Arunachal–Assam border, translating years of dialogue and agreement into action on the ground.
