The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, fielding Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from his stronghold Jalukbari and naming former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi as its candidate from Dispur.
The party released a list comprising around 86–88 candidates for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, signalling the start of an intense electoral battle in the state. The BJP is expected to contest most of the seats, leaving a portion for its allies, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF).
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has represented Jalukbari since 2001, will be seeking a sixth consecutive term from the constituency. His renomination underscores the party’s reliance on established leaders in key constituencies.
In a notable political development, Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently switched from the Indian National Congress, has been fielded from the prestigious Dispur seat. His candidature reflects the BJP’s strategy of inducting influential leaders from rival parties to strengthen its electoral prospects.
Party sources indicated that the list includes a mix of sitting MLAs, new faces, and leaders who have recently joined the BJP. Several incumbents have reportedly been dropped, pointing to a recalibration of the party’s electoral strategy ahead of the polls.
The announcement comes as political activity intensifies across Assam, with major parties finalising their candidates and campaign strategies. The upcoming elections are expected to witness a multi-cornered contest, with the BJP aiming to retain power with a strong mandate.
Further lists of candidates are likely to be released in the coming days as the party completes its seat-sharing arrangements and finalises nominations.
