Aminul Islam, a senior leader of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and MLA from Mankachar, has resigned from the party after over two decades of association, citing personal reasons.
Speaking to ANI, Islam said he holds no resentment towards the party leadership despite his decision to step down. “I have resigned due to personal reasons. I worked in the party for 20 years under the leadership of Badruddin Ajmal. I have no grudges against anyone. He is my mentor,” he said.
The resignation comes at a crucial time ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, adding a new dimension to the state’s political landscape. Islam also indicated that his future political move would depend on the wishes of his constituents.
“I will consult the people of my constituency. If they want me to contest the elections, I will do so from whichever party they prefer,” he added.
His resignation follows recent disciplinary action by the AIUDF, which had reportedly suspended him over alleged anti-party activities. The party leadership had raised concerns over his statements and actions, terming them detrimental to its interests.
A prominent face of the AIUDF in lower Assam, Islam has played a significant role in strengthening the party’s base in the region over the years. His exit is expected to have an impact on the electoral dynamics, particularly in constituencies where the AIUDF has traditionally enjoyed support.
While there is speculation about his possible alignment with another political party, no official announcement has been made so far regarding his next move.
The development is being closely watched as political parties gear up for the forthcoming elections in Assam.
