The Guwahati Police has issued a public advisory cautioning residents against the spread of rumours related to alleged child lifters, amid growing concern in different parts of the city.
Police officials clarified that no verified cases of child abduction linked to such rumours have been reported so far. They stressed that several messages circulating on social media platforms are unsubstantiated and misleading, and warned that sharing such content can trigger unnecessary panic among citizens.
The rumours have reportedly surfaced in multiple localities across Guwahati, prompting anxiety among parents and guardians. Many families have become increasingly cautious, with some restricting children’s outdoor activities in response to the circulating claims.
In its advisory, the police urged the public to refrain from forwarding or posting unverified information and to rely only on official updates. Citizens have also been encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station instead of taking matters into their own hands.
Highlighting the potential dangers of misinformation, officials referred to a recent incident in the Ulubari area, where a युवक was allegedly assaulted by locals on suspicion of being a child lifter. The suspicion later proved to be unfounded, underscoring the risks of mob behaviour driven by rumours.
The police warned that such misinformation can lead to public disorder and even violence, recalling similar incidents in the past where rumours have had serious consequences.
Reiterating their commitment to maintaining law and order, the police appealed to residents to remain alert but not alarmed, and to act responsibly in order to prevent the spread of fear and misinformation.
