Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Assam, Arunachal Pradesh; IMD Urges Caution

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across several parts of the Northeast over the next two days.
According to the weather department, isolated heavy rainfall is likely on March 16 and 17, with wind speeds expected to reach 30–50 kmph in some areas. The IMD has advised residents to remain alert and follow safety guidelines as adverse weather conditions may disrupt normal life.
Meteorologists said the ongoing weather activity is being triggered by an upper-air cyclonic circulation over Northeast Assam and adjoining Arunachal Pradesh, which is drawing moisture into the region and causing widespread rain and thunderstorms.
The IMD also reported that heavy to very heavy rainfall has been recorded in isolated areas of Assam and Meghalaya during the past 24 hours, while parts of Arunachal Pradesh experienced heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and hailstorms.
In several places, sudden showers and storms have already led to waterlogging and localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Authorities have cautioned residents to avoid open spaces during lightning, stay away from weak structures and trees during strong winds, and remain updated with official weather advisories.
The IMD said the rainfall activity may continue across parts of Northeast India over the next few days, although the intensity could vary depending on changing atmospheric conditions.
