2026 Assam Polls Will Be People vs ‘Self-Perceived King’: APCC Chief

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Friday said the 2026 Assam Assembly elections would be a direct contest between the people of Assam and what he described as a “self-perceived king”, in an apparent attack on the BJP-led state government.
Addressing a mass convention organised by the Dibrugarh District Nagarik Sanmilan, Gogoi said the upcoming polls would not be a routine electoral battle between political parties but a fight to protect democracy, dignity and the rights of the people. He alleged that the ruling dispensation had become arrogant and authoritarian, distancing itself from public concerns.
“The 2026 election will be the people versus a self-styled ruler. The people of Assam will give a befitting reply to arrogance, threats and attempts to divide society,” Gogoi said, asserting that public anger against the present government was steadily growing.
The APCC chief accused the BJP government of trying to influence voters through money power, intimidation and divisive politics, and alleged that constitutional norms and democratic values were being undermined. He claimed that welfare schemes were being used selectively for political gains and warned that such practices would be rejected by voters.
Gogoi stressed the need to safeguard Assam’s land, culture, heritage, peace and social harmony, stating that these issues would form the core of the Congress party’s campaign. He also hinted at the possibility of a broader opposition unity ahead of the polls, saying discussions were underway to bring like-minded parties and civil society groups together.
Leaders and representatives from various opposition parties and organisations were present at the convention, reflecting efforts to build a united front against the ruling BJP in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly elections.
The Congress leader further claimed that the outcome of the Assam polls would have implications beyond the state, potentially influencing political trends at the national level.
The BJP has not yet responded to Gogoi’s remarks.
