Three women were infected with HIV while having a cosmetic process known as a ‘’vampire facial’’  at a New Mexico spa, marking the first known cases of the virus bering transmitted during a cosmetic injection procedure, according to US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC) highlights the serious risks associated with unregulated establishments that offer both medical and beauty services

 

This establishment was shut down in 2018 for operating without proper licenses and for failing to adher to safe injection control practices, the owner is currently serving a prision sentence for practicing medicine without a licenses, it has brought potential risks

The chain of events began when a former client tested positive HIV in 2018 after going on a vampire facial at the spa

 

These practices included the equipment meant for single use, there are also presence of unlabelled blood vials

Some clients tested HIV positive shortly after visiting the spa, they had no known risks factors for the virus, it also highlighted no additional cases were identified , nearly 200 clients and their partners had undergone testing.
